Creamiest Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate

This pumpkin spice hot chocolate is like autumn in a drink! With the smooth creaminess of the milk, and the punchy flavour of the spices, is the perfect comforting autumnal drink to make! The hot chocolate is so quick and easy to whip up, and far cheaper than getting a pumpkin spice drink from a coffee shop!! Give it a try now, you won’t regret it!

You can choose to use pre-made pumpkin spice mix, but I prefer making my own because it means that I can juggle the ratios and proportions based on how I am feeling on the day! On days where I want a really punchy spice, I add more clove and ginger, whereas if I am fancying a more warming and comforting spice, I add more cinnamon! It is totally up to you whether you make your own or use pre-made, but making your own if far cheaper, you can make a lot more for the same price, and it means you can have other uses for your leftover spices!

Something I highly recommend that you try out is adding a dairy free chocolate bar to your hot chocolate. This can be as a substitution to your cocoa powder, or as an addition if you want a really intense chocolate flavour. Adding real chocolate to your pumpkin spice hot chocolate not only makes the consistency thicker and more creamy, it adds an extra smoothness to the flavour, and makes the chocolate flavour far richer. It is a fantastic way to level up your hot chocolate if you want to impress! If you do not have a milk frother, add your milk in after your hot water and microwave for 40 seconds.

The reason I mix all the spices into the maple syrup before adding the other liquids is because it is far easier and quicker to stir them in this way. If I add the hot water straight away, I find that the spices float on the surface of the water more, and take a lot longer to incorporate into the hot chocolate. By adding the spices to a thicker liquid like the maple syrup, before adding in the hot water, you save yourself a bit on an arm workout and allow all the ingredients to be fully mixed in and evenly distributed throughout the drink!

What else you could add to your pumpkin spice hot chocolate:

  • Marshmallows
  • Dairy free whipped cream
  • Chocolate protein powder
  • Sprinkles
  • Food colouring- to make it a red velvet hot chocolate!
  • Freshly ground nutmeg- this is a game changer
  • Dusting of chocolate on top – I usually use cinnamon but chocolate is great too!
  • Melted chocolate to your hot milk- to step up the level
  • Chocolate sauce on top of your dairy free whipped cream

You can either leave your hot chocolate like this (which is soooo delicious), of you can add some toppings for aesthetic purposes and for even more flavour. Often, I add cinnamon to the top, and on the odd occasion when I have some dairy free whipped cream in the house, I will add a layer of marshmallows, then the whipped cream (so that the marshmallows melt into the hot chocolate), and then another layer of marshmallows on top. You can then also sprinkle some more cinnamon or cocoa powder on top of this, for an indulgent cup of pumppin spice hot chocolate!

Ingredients: (serves 1)

  • 1/8 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/8 tsp ground ground cloves
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground ground cinnamon
  • 2 tsp cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp maple syrup
  • 4 tsp hot water
  • 1/2 cup dairy free milk

Method:

Step 1: boil your hot water

Step 2: in a large mug, mix together all your dry ingredients.

Step 3: add your maple syrup and mix thoroughly until all spices are fully incorporated.

Step 4: add in your hot water and mix thoroughly.

Step 5: use a milk frother to froth your milk, or alternatively heat your milk in the microwave.

Step 6: add your milk to your mug and mix. You can top with marshmallows and dairy free whipped cream!

Best served immediately. To reheat from room temperature, put in the microwave for 1 minute, or until piping hot.
